Our commitments to the responsible development and use of AI
our manifesto
Since Gradiant began, we’ve cared deeply about transparency, representation, and free will. Each of us also wants a world that is fairer, greener, and more inclusive. In that spirit, we have always seen data as a tool—not an end in itself.
Given the many challenges faced by the cultural and tourism sectors (including copyright, inclusion, cultural sovereignty, and the environment), it felt timely to undertake a reflection on responsible AI for these fields.
This manifesto is the result of that work and sets out the concrete commitments we make in our practice.
Because we believe responsible AI matters, we commit to…
BE TRANSPARENT
- Make sure people who provide their data are informed and give their consent
- Keep stakeholders informed about the processes used
AIM FOR SIMPLICITY
- Reuse what already exists instead of always building from scratch
- Choose simplicity through creativity—constraints can spark better ideas
- Optimize data volumes
- Accept that some questions take time—and therefore patience
STAY VIGILANT
- Assess data representation to prevent potential bias and propose ways to counter it
- Consider context to avoid risky extrapolations
- Clearly state who could be impacted—and how
- Anticipate misuse and unintended uses
OPEN UP POSSIBILITIES
- Tap into creativity to explore multiple possible answers
- Design solutions as part of an ecosystem
- Work in partnership—through dialogue
FOSTER AUTONOMY
- Ensure decision-making remains human—responsibility cannot be delegated to machines
- Encourage strong, active stakeholder participation
- Acknowledge that data doesn’t answer everything
